A common issue with the N55 is crank hub failure/slip due to the OE design of using a central bolt & friction to keep the engine in time. Both when tuned and stock usually during downchanges due to the torque load against the crankshaft the OE hub can slip and cause timing misalignment which can result in engine limp mode/lack of power and or bent inlet/exhaust valves.

Insane Performance's crank hub is offered in a 2-pin and upgraded 4-pin design for those looking to push their S55/N55s to the limits while having greater peace of mind.  Please keep in mind neither version has had a known failure with 1200+ vehicles on the road today and counting. Insane Performance's 2-pin crank hub has also been tested up to 1000+ WHP without issue. 

Fitting

Installing the Insane Performance 4-Pin Crank Hub is a detailed process that should be performed by a skilled technician familiar with BMW N55 engines. The installation involves precise drilling and alignment to ensure optimal performance and reliability. fitting includes a new timing chain, guides, seals, tensioner, all necessary screws (including cam and sump bolts), as well as gaskets, ensuring a thorough and reliable upgrade.

Optional Upgrade: ACL Performance Bearings

For extra peace of mind and added engine strength, it’s a smart move to upgrade to ACL Performance Main Crankshaft Bearings during the crank hub installation. ACL’s Race Series bearings are built to handle more stress and higher RPMs, making them a great choice if you’re pushing your BMW to its limits. Adding these bearings can improve the engine’s durability and reduce the risk of wear under heavy loads.

Why Consider Rod Bearings?

Rod bearing issues, while not as common on the N55 as on other BMW engines, can still happen—especially if oil quality is poor or oil change intervals are stretched too long. Worn rod bearings can lead to serious engine damage if left unchecked. Upgrading to stronger bearings during the crank hub install is a proactive way to protect your engine, especially if you plan on increasing power or driving aggressively.
